The IMO issued a news release summarizing the recently-completed 89th session of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 89). In addition to preparing interim guidance on the use of privately contracted armed security personnel on board ships transiting high risk areas, the session adopted an amendment to the SOLAS Convention regarding lifeboat release mechanisms and was updated on progress made with the implementation of the International Goal-based Construction Standards for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers and on developments in relation to the establishment and testing of LRIT Data Centres.
