Dear ASTA members,

As you know, the ASTA Ship Operations and Safety Committee has been working with the US Coast Guard to create an ASTA-specific rig inspection protocol. This would allow member vessels to inspect their own sailing rigs and with effective implementation of this protocol, avoid unnecessary CG requirements for third-party rig inspections. While this protocol is still in draft form and has not been formally approved by USCG Headquarters, guidance from senior people in Washington is to begin to employ this protocol immediately. Again, this is not an approved system, but the Coast Guard has it, likes it, and is encouraging us to use it. The sooner you employ the system in your vessel the longer your paper trail will be. USCG Marine Inspectors are aware of this system and will be asking you about it.

Take the below document, edit it with detail sufficient to your sailing rig, and happy rig inspecting.

Best,

The ASTA Ship Operations and Safety Committee
